Campo

Emerged in 1987, with the idea of strengthening low-income grass-roots community groups within the greater Rio de Janeiro area, and in doing so encouraging a better quality of life and a more involved citizenry. Among its founders are several people that were engaged in social work and many who worked alongside the Catholic Church, especially with the Catholic organization, Network of Ecclesiastical Communities (CEBs). They believed that through mobilization and consciousness building, especially of youth, communities could be strengthened and developed. The objective of Campo´s team has always been to “learn to fish” with the communities.

The Mission

To support grassroots community-based organizations, strengthening community organization into a transformative force that contributes to the broadening of citizenship and an improved quality of life.

SOS Periphery

The project serves five low-income communities in SaoGoncalo, Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

Assistance to Grass-Roots Community Groups

Over the past 18 years, CAMPO has established partnerships with more than 250 organizations, and today CAMPO acts as an assistance center for approximately 40 groups. Among these are community centers for childhood education, nursery schools, pre-schools, academic programs, brinquedotecas , community centers for professional development, initiatives for work and income development like the Network of Service Centers (RCS) and the Tinguá Center of Ecology and Citizenship (Eco-Tinguá).
Campo works with groups by providing support including regular visits to groups, various trainings, formulation of pedagogic proposals, and support for and promotion of events.

Self-Management and Self-Sustenance

Are essential to the Campo philosophy, along with stimulating the participation of community leaders and sustainable activities in order that community groups guarantee their own existence. To achieve this goal there are two stages. The first phase is the “love affair” between Campo and community groups. During this period, Campo explores the objectives of the community and evaluates the viability of the proposed project(s). A successful “love affair” results in “marriage”. When the project begins to produce results, Campo’s involvement intensifies; always keeping in mind the essential objectives of the project.

Refúgio Ecotinguá

The Environmental Education department develops its work through the Tinguá Center of Ecology and Citizenship (CEC Tinguá), located in Tinguá in Nova
Iguaçu (RJ). CEC Tinguá's principal mission is to encourage and stimulate socio-environmental activities in Baixada Fluminense, above all aiming to preserve the Biological Reserve of Tinguá, one of the most beautiful environmental reserves in Brazil. CEC is located on an area of 25 hectares of which 16.5 hectares since 2002 have been considered a private
environmental reserve (RPPN). It is the first of its kind in its municipality.
