SOS Periphery

SOS Periphery´s objective is to contribute to the strengthening of low-income communities in São Gonçalo, a municipality in the metropolitan Rio de Janeiro area. The activities of this project began in November of 2003 and will extend until the conclusion of 2006. Community leaders and residents of the five communities of São Gonçalo are the participants of the project: Jardim Bom Retiro, Santa Isabel, Jockey Clube, Fazenda dos Mineiros and Salgueiro.

Supported by the German philanthropic organization, Weltfriedensdienst, of Berlin, in partnership with Campo, SOS Periphery is financed by the Ministry of Development and Economic Cooperation of the federal government of Germany.

The project encompasses professional development, income and job development, and investment in local infrastructure. It is composed of three stages: sensitization, qualification and dynamization.

In order to sensitize the inhabitants of the region, Núcleo Teatral was created, in partnership with the Theatre Center of the Oppressed.

The goal of qualification is to train individuals who then train several others (these individuals are referred to as multipliers). These multipliers train sustainable agents of community development based on participative methods and focused on practical activities.

“Dynamization” refers to a space of exchange and reflection for all involved in the project, aimed at renewing human relations and preventing and solving conflicts.

The three stages are conducted simultaneously in accordance with a work plan and are accompanied by three committees composed of representatives from the communities of São Gonçalo.

Currently, SOS Periferia's operational headquarters are located at Rua Caetano João, nº 45/405, in the Center of Alcântara. The telephone number is (21) the 2603-0330 and the email is sosperiferiasg@campo.org.br
